Group Show: SPRING TIME

During the month of April at Middlebury locations, we are kicking off the season with a group show between the two galleries titled “Springtime”. Spring’s warmth, color, and light will be echoed in the work of four artists’ works, two featured in each gallery.

At our Falls location Edgewater favorite Jill Matthews’ new collection of still lives will be paired with artist Kay Flierl’s barn landscapes. Matthews’ compositions are of richly rendered flowers against tranquil backgrounds. The paintings possess a serenity and quiet beauty. Kay Flierl will be introduced to the Edgewater community with her collection of barn landscapes. With her loose brush work, unexpected color choices and varied perspectives, Flierl creates structures and landscapes that convey her love of the subject and of the process of painting.

On the Green will feature still life artist Karen O’Neil and painter and mixed media artist Helen Shulman. Karen O’Neil’s still lives of glassware and fruit are lush and light filled. The viewer can’t help but to enjoy both the subject matter and the artist’s interpretation of it. A simple dish or piece of fruit becomes an object to savor. Helen Shulman begins with the idea of a landscape, she then pulls it apart, and manipulates it through her use of sanding, scraping, and layering until she is left with the suggestion of landscape but more importantly a composition that is visually interesting.
