Julia Jensen divides her time between Vermont and Nantucket and paints the landscape of both regions. She is known for her gestural, expressive style, the quality of light in her canvases and the sense of motion expressed in each composition. Her chosen subject matter has not changed through the years but her process and focus have shifted as she has become more interested in portraying her impressions and memories of a place.The title “Thereafter” echoes Jensen’s  evolved process of painting the landscape by suggesting that there is a continuation of something that started from a particular point, in this case, the details of a scene, but then continues on to evolve into a composition with its own set of elements of abstraction, color, light and emotion. 

“ For me the process of painting is about working with the residue of impression. Most pieces come together over a period of time. I do my work one day and perhaps weeks later I might come back to the same painting for the next layer. There is an instinct that expresses itself through the process. As a painting evolves I move away from asking questions about how to express a certain time or place and more into questions about what it is that the painting itself wants to put forward.

Thereafter implies something that has gone before. The paintings emerge from a distinct starting point but that moment has ceased after setting a process in motion. There is a form of alchemy involved that transforms the moment into memory and into painting.” Julia Jensen

Julia Jensen has studios in Vermont and on the island of Nantucket in Massachusetts. She is represented by galleries throughout the US and her work is held by both private and corporate collectors.
