Shimmer
A Solo Exhibition of New Work Featuring
JULIA PURINTON
February 28th – April 5th, 2025
OPENING RECEPTION: Friday March 7th 5:00-6:30 PM
Julia Purinton creates a world of ethereal beauty in her pastoral landscapes. She is a regional painter who understands the unique quality of Vermont’s open spaces with its shifting seasonal light, varied terrain and changing palette. Purinton chooses to interpret the landscape based on her emotional response to her observations of the natural world. Her paintings are a distillation of the literal and are the result of the importance she places in our connection to the planet as a centering force for our physical and psychological well being.
Her paintings possess a dreamlike, somewhat idealistic view of the landscape. A gentle light reflects off a meandering stream, blues and greens are warmed to summer hues in a summer landscape of field and forest, and compositions are such that we are led through the landscape by winding waterways or rolling fields. Her impressionistic, tonalist style further enhances the graceful quality of her work.
“Shimmer” is Julia Purinton’s solo exhibition of new paintings in oil. She presents this body of work at a time that she feels we need to remember the healing abilities of the natural world.
“These paintings share a common subject, whether the image is a forest or a field: that is, the importance of nature as a palliative to contemporary social malaise.
I work in the hope that viewers will be moved by the sublime beauty of the natural world and reminded of the importance of a diverse environment to our physical health, our psychological well-being, and our future as humans on our remarkable planet.
Each piece is intended as a meditation on the commonality of human response to the majesty and beauty of nature.”
