Bringing together the works of dear companions and creative comrades, Between presents Bonnie Baird’s and Kathryn Milillo’s profoundly different yet deeply connected interpretations of the Vermont landscape.
Kathryn Milillo’s paintings explore the quiet poetry embedded within everyday life. Her compositions are structural yet relaxed, balancing precise lines and defined forms with a sense of openness and discovery. Drawing from familiar scenes and cultural moments, she captures the subtle spaces between experience – the relationship of internal and external worlds. Through pastel colors and thoughtful color play, Milillo transforms ordinary moments into meditations on perception and memory. Her work begins with the tangible world, yet moves beyond simple observation through her sensitivity to light, form, and feeling.
Bonnie Baird’s landscapes approach the land from a different place: not as a record of a specific scene, but as an expression of emotional experience. Her paintings emerge from an intuitive relationship with the landscape itself. Her Vermont landscapes are charged with atmosphere – light breaking through dramatic skies, energy moving across hillsides, and moments of stillness existing alongside intensity. Through a physical and instinctive process, her work is marked by striking contrasts and layered textures, capturing the emotional memory of place. What she describes as “Core-Memory” or “Memory-Scapes” translates the feelings of landscape into something universal: a recognition of our connection to the earth and to the experiences held within it.
Together, these two artists create a conversation through contrast: observation and intuition, structure and emotion, the seen world and the felt world. Milillo finds meaning within the quiet details of everyday surroundings, while Baird draws out the emotional resonance of the landscape itself. Their works meet in the spaces between certainty and imagination, light and darkness, external experience and internal memory.
Between exists in these shared spaces: between landscapes, between lives, and between friends.
On Saturday, August 29th, from 4:00 – 6:00pm, we will open this exhibition with an Artist Conversation and Reception followed by an open floor for questions and discussion. Companion pieces will be read by poets, Mary Elder Jacobsen and Rebecca McMeekin. Please join us as we celebrate the work of two renowned Vermont landscape painters.
