WARREN MCDERMOTT

3D + Sculpture

ARTIST STATEMENT

After inheriting his grandfather’s woodworking tools at a young age, the artist developed an early fascination with carving three-dimensional forms from wood. He later studied sculpture, focusing on wood carving, and drew inspiration from artists such as Martin Puryear and Ernst Gamperl, whose work bridges traditional craft and contemporary art. Following his studies, he attended the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine and spent seven years apprenticing and building wood-and-canvas canoes in Canada.

Working primarily as a wood turner and carver, his practice explores the tension between material and form. Embracing the natural history embedded in each piece of wood, he incorporates bark inclusions, cracks, warping, and voids to celebrate the individuality of every log. His sculptural vessels become records of a tree’s life, preserving its history through grain, texture, and form.
