BETSY SILVERMAN
PAINTING + MIXED MEDIA
ARTIST STATEMENT
At first glance, Betsy Silverman’s artwork presents brilliantly colored realistic representations of New England life. A closer look reveals that she crafts her artworks entirely from recycled magazines. Betsy searches magazine pages to find gradations of color, text, and images that she uses to create an interplay between her subjects and the precisely cut paper fragments composing them – juxtapositions that evoke memory, wonder, and humor. Betsy’s technique combines her broad training in visual art with an ecological consciousness that inspired her determination to use recycled materials.
Betsy graduated from Cornell and earned a master’s degree at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her artwork has been exhibited widely and featured in various publications, including Artscope Magazine, Venü Magazine, and New England Monthly Magazine.
