FALLING INTO IT
A Two Person Exhibition Featuring Scott Addis and Kay Flierl
October 4th – November 17th, 2024
Edgewater Gallery at the Falls, One Mill Street, Middlebury
Much can be gained from taking chances, embracing change, and trying new directions. In “Falling Into It” painters Scott Addis and Kay Flierl describe growth through the process of letting go and being open to new challenges. The landscape and rural architecture are the subjects of Addis’s and Flierl’s work for the exhibition and within these subjects both artists have chosen to explore new territory in their painting. Montreal based artist Scott Addis has made a shift to focus on a new approach to color. In this collection he uses a mix of brighter, clearer tones juxtaposed with those that are darker and earthier in nature.
“Transitions, color, change. Back to school, longing.
Hope and harvest.
Seven years now since I planted seeds, shifting my work towards color. A lot of learning for this mid-career artist, a big change. Those seeds planted along the Maine Coast, nurtured in the studio, in the field, and in the classroom, have bore fruit this Fall.
Delicious” – Scott Addis
Kay Flierl lives in the west and has focused on painting the rural landscape of that region. On a recent road trip through Vermont she discovered the qualities of the landscape here that make it unique. She studied the look of the mountains, forests, farmland and lakes in our region and created a body of work that reflects the beauty she discovered on her journey.
“This body of work is informed by a theme of seasonal change and surrender. Our environment and structures provide a visual vocabulary to the grace revealed through the passage of repeated cycles of change. What was, is no longer. But rather transformed and given new life, strength and beauty. My barns and snapshots of rural Vermont landscape, give witness to the valuable lesson of letting go and falling into…” – Kay Flierl
Scott Addis lives and has his studio in Montreal, Quebec. Born in rural Pennsylvania, and after time spent serving in the navy, he eventually landed in Cincinnati where he studied painting at the University of Cincinnati under Greg Storer and Igor Babailov. His work is exhibited widely in both Quebec and the US and is held in both private and corporate collections.
Kay Flierl has her studio in Denver Colorado. After receiving a bachelors in Landscape Design from Colorado State University, she went on to work in the field and then also in advertising and graphic design. She had always studied and worked on fine art painting and eventually realized that it was through painting that she could find her truest expression. At this point she devoted herself to painting full time. She exhibits in galleries throughout the US and her work is held in both private and corporate collections.
