Edgewater Gallery at the Falls, One Mill Street, Middlebury

Space and Place, a group show featuring works by Tracy Everly, Philip Frey, and Rachel  Wilcox, brings together landscapes and floral still lifes, exploring the intersection of the natural and composed. This exhibition considers the painting process itself, and how the artist can distill an ephemeral moment into composition. Working between these contexts offers a reflection on both the spontaneous beauty of organic forms and the creative impulse to observe, contain, and reframe them. Even the most intimate compositions suggest an encompassing atmosphere, while vast scenes retain a sense of thoughtful arrangement.

There is a subtle connection that emerges between Everly, Frey, and Wilcox in their approach. Each artist negotiates the balance of organic growth and compositional order. While these paintings are representational of the subject, it is the quiet experiences and memories that are conveyed. A single stem, carefully placed in a vessel, becomes as resonant as the play of light across an open landscape.

Space and Place invites viewers to reflect on the ways in which art transforms natural phenomena into composed visual experiences, and how attentive observation can turn transient moments into lasting impressions.

The Opening Reception will take place at the Gallery at the Falls on Friday, August 15th, 5:30 – 7:00pm. All three artists will join in conversation with a Panel Talk that begins at 6:00pm. Vermont artist Susan Abbott will be a guest on the Panel as well, as her solo exhibition will be opening at the Gallery on the Green the following evening. Join us for this celebration of painting, as a form of experience– meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and learn how each painter brings their subjects alive through unique approaches.
