Formal elements, such as color, shape, and line, are my foremost source of inspiration, and yet I connect my visual vocabulary to specific landscape, rocky coastline, fog, and the flotsam and jetsam of tides, for example. I like to throw together disparate elements, as if they washed up on the beach in a random arrangement, and then see how I can relate them to one another formally.
In some of my series I focus in on a particular structure or repeated element, such as a grid or concentric circles, and play with color, pattern, and form. This repetition, of elements – focusing on more subtle variations – provides me a welcome counterpoint to the more dramatic contrasts that I usually go for.
I try to stay present to the pieces in process, without trying to predict the endpoint. My best work is that which emerges over time, often after leaving them for ‘dead’, and then beginning again with dramatic paint-overs. I hope the pieces reveal a bit of the nature of this exploration and engage the viewer in the process.
