This fall, Reclaimed brings together photographer Jim Westphalen and mixed-media artist Duncan Johnson in a two-artist exhibition exploring the resonance of renewal. Jim Westphalen and Duncan Johnson reimagine what it means to reclaim and reinhabit the landscape—one through imagery, the other through material.

Jim Westphalen turns his lens toward America’s vanishing rural architecture—weathered barns, one-room schoolhouses, and relics of civic life—capturing them in a hauntingly beautiful narrative of decay and preservation. Duncan Johnson, by contrast, builds forward through past materials—working with carefully prepared and found reclaimed wood, he constructs wall sculptures that feel both architectural and intimate.

Together, Westphalen and Johnson pose a thoughtful dialogue on reclamation. Westphalen offers a poetic pause to witness fading landscapes, granting these vanishing structures a dignified presence in the present. Johnson, conversely, reclaims the tangible—rescuing discarded wood, bringing structure and meaning back through assembly. As a pair, their works reflect on how the past’s fragments can inform a renewed appreciation of place—visually and materially.
