Cut It Out: Solo Exhibition featuring Betsy Silverman

Betsy Silverman’s artwork, which she describes as fragmented realism, combines her architectural sensibilities with her training in color theory to evoke tension between magazine graphics and unique views of New England life.  Her works are made entirely of recycled magazine paper on canvas.

Silverman studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design and it was there that her experimentation with recycled paper began. She used recycled paper to create structures and then broadened her use of the medium to experiment with the found color and design on each magazine page, drawing from this expansive source to create complex compositions in cut paper, including landscapes, cityscapes and animals. For the artist, it is important that she is using a material that is recycled, accessible, and has a low impact on the environment. Silverman’s collection for Edgewater is made up of familiar Vermont scenes, livestock, and still life designs. Viewers will at first be drawn to the vibrant, energetic realism of each composition, and then fascinated by the artist’s ability to search out the magazine fragments whose hues, and graphic markings, cut to fit, will be instrumental in creating the intricate composition.
