Hannah Bureau unveils a collection of new paintings in her solo exhibition “Open Air” opening April 15th and running through May 22nd at Edgewater Gallery at the Falls, Middlebury.

“I wanted to emphasize the sky in my new work for Open Air. The paintings in this show have a lower horizon allowing for more sky, light, and air to create a bright atmosphere that feels open and fresh.”

Bureau paints from memory referencing the landscape but working with elements of abstraction, creating space and distance through contemporary gesture, layers of overlapping color, and varied mark-making. The result is an intersection of the abstract with the landscape which feels familiar and harmonious.

Hannah Bureau was born in Paris and moved to the US when she was 8 years old. She is the third generation of women painters in her family and grew up surrounded by the arts. She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from The Rhode Island School of Design, and her Masters of Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design For Young Contemporaries at Boston University where she was selected outstanding graduate student in 2007 and 2008. Her mentors include John Imber and Eric Aho. Bureau’s work is exhibited nationally and her work is held in both corporate and private collections.
