Unspoken offers a compelling exploration of the modern feminine experience through Tracy Burtz’s large-scale portraits. In this latest body of work, Burtz captures the quiet power of expression and gesture, revealing the inner lives of her subjects with emotional depth and subtlety. After more than forty-five years of artistic training and professional practice, her process has shifted to prioritize narrative over form—yet her compositions have never been more dynamic or resonant.

Her signature use of rhythmic patterns and a joyful palette imbues a flattened painterly perspective with energy and intimacy. These portraits are deeply collaborative: each begins with a figure and evolves through Burtz’s intuitive response to her model, informed by her own life experiences. The result is work that feels both vulnerable and bold, inviting viewers to engage in personal reflection.

Throughout this series, recurring symbols and motifs add layers of meaning. One such motif is the dog, a frequent presence in Burtz’s recent paintings. “I paint about their fidelity in a world that lacks this,” she says. “For many, the embodiment of true constancy is the dog, who sits and watches and loves.” Her symbolic language forms a narrative that is both timely and timeless—an artistic search for beauty and truth in a turbulent world. Burtz shares, “The ultimate goal… is to focus on giving ourselves permission to feel all the ups and downs of politics, aging, personal growth, and differences in opinion in these complicated times.”
